Decorations Guide

Decorations are the location-upgrade layer that many players miss on the first hour. The official v0.4.4 demo notes put it plainly: you can buy decorations for locations that attract cats and generate more profit. They are not cosmetic wallpaper. They change how busy a biome feels and how many likes a photo is worth.

Why decorations exist

Snap the Cat sells a fantasy of going viral with cat photos, but the clicker underneath needs a reason to revisit an old meadow after a new beach unlocks. Decorations are that reason. A dressed location pulls more cats into frame and adds a like value that sits beside the cat and the costume before multipliers apply.

Gameplay videos often pause on a new autumn clearing or a dandelion field and ask whether the backdrop is just pretty. Without decorations, the answer is close to yes. With decorations, the backdrop is a machine. Spend likes here when you plan to farm a biome for more than a few minutes.

How decorations affect likes

The same June 2026 patch that defined tokens also defined likes: cats, costumes, and decorations each contribute a like value, then that total is multiplied by the sum of other effects (skill tree nodes, follower scaling, photo-count cards, and similar bonuses).

That means a cheap hat on a common cat in an undressed starting biome underperforms a modest cat in a fully dressed location. It also means decorations stack with, rather than replace, the costume slot. You still want outfits. You also want the room they walk through to be worth photographing.

Community testing has not published a full per-prop table. Treat in-game tooltips as the source of truth for a given decoration, and treat this page as the spending rule: buy location upgrades on the biome you actually click, not on a location you unlocked and abandoned.

How to buy and place them

Decorations are purchased with likes, not tokens. Tokens stay reserved for packs. If the shop feels expensive, you are probably looking at a like-priced location item while your heart pool is still tiny. Grab likes-per-photo and extra photo cards first, then loop back.

You decorate the location you are standing in. Switching biomes does not refund props. Early on, fully dressing the starting area is more efficient than sprinkling one item across four maps. Once follower milestones open autumn, the dandelion field, the coast (the boundless-sea style biome in launch footage), and later nights, shift spend to whichever roster you farm for rares.

Achievement hunters should still visit every biome. Steam lists 49 achievements, including Brush cats and collection goals. Decorations that attract cats also make brushing and photographing faster because more bodies walk through the shot.

When to spend likes on decorations

First thirty minutes. Skip them. Photo Count, likes per photo, and a first follower node pay for themselves. A decoration on an empty roster is a pretty tax.

Once two biomes are open. Dress the one with cats you actually click. If autumn is where your hats look best, that is the farm, not the meadow you already outgrew.

Late collection. Decorations on a high-traffic biome beat hoarding likes for a skill node you will buy tomorrow anyway. Profit from a dressed location is ongoing. A single node is a one-time bump.

Do not spend the last of your likes on props if the next follower milestone is close. Biomes still unlock on followers, and a new location can be a better farm than another lamp in the old one. See how to unlock biomes and how to get followers.

Decorations versus skill tree versus packs

Think of three sinks:

  • Likes buy the skill tree, camera stats, item slots, and decorations.
  • Tokens buy packs of cats and costumes.
  • Followers are not spent. They open doors.

If you mix these up, you will either starve the shop or starve the meadow. The how tokens work guide is the companion page for the wallet split. The skill tree and best build pages cover node order. Decorations sit in the like-sink column beside those nodes, not instead of them.

Browse every location from the biomes hub. New accounts should still read getting started. For like math, stay on how likes work.

Frequently asked

Are decorations required to finish the game? No. You can reach credits without maxing every prop. They speed farms and raise like profit, which makes follower walls shorter.

Do decorations carry into New Game+? The studio has not published a New Game+ spec on Steam. Do not plan a second run around an unofficial carry-over list.

Can packs grant decorations? No. Packs grant cats and outfits. Location props are like purchases on the biome itself.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Snap the Cat.

Do decorations actually attract more cats?

Yes. Official v0.4.4 notes say decorations attract cats and generate more profit. They also add a like value before multipliers.

Should I decorate every biome equally?

No. Dress the location you farm. Spread-thin props on maps you never click waste likes that could buy photo cards or follower nodes.

Are decorations paid with tokens?

No. Tokens open packs. Decorations spend likes, the same pool as skill-tree upgrades.
