How Tokens Work in Snap the Cat

What tokens buy, what they do not buy, and how they sit beside likes and followers.

How Tokens Work

Tokens are one of three currencies in Snap the Cat, alongside likes and followers. The official June 2026 demo update (v0.4.4 on itch.io) made the split explicit: cats drop tokens when you photograph them, and those tokens are spent on opening packs. Likes and followers do different jobs. Mixing the three up is the fastest way to stall an account.

What tokens are

Tokens (older player notes still say money) drop from cats as you take photos. They appear on screen with likes and followers, then fade after a short time. That fade is intentional. The same v0.4.4 patch that locked tokens to packs also made floating numbers disappear so the playfield stays readable. You do not need to click every popup. The wallet still receives the credit.

You do not spend tokens on the skill tree or on location decorations. Those purchases use likes, the heart-shaped resource that climbs after every photo. Tokens are the pack currency, nothing else.

What tokens buy

Open packs in the shop to add cats and costumes you do not already own. The Steam store promises guaranteed rewards: a pack should not hand you a copy of something you already collected. Since v0.4.4, extras raise the level of the cat or costume you already have instead of spawning a duplicate.

There is more than one box type. Demo players asked why two tracks exist, and the earlier v0.2.8 balance pass even repriced the Tigris pack (base cost jumped from 1,000 to 10,000 in that build). Live odds are unpublished. Treat any percentage table on this wiki as a community estimate, not an official drop table.

Achievements also pay tokens. If the trophy icon in the upgrade shop has unclaimed rewards, collect them before you dump likes into the next node. Several itch.io players admitted they ignored that icon for a long stretch and sat on a pile of unspent achievement tokens.

Likes versus tokens versus followers

Likes (hearts) measure how well your photos are doing and fund account upgrades: likes per photo, followers per photo, camera size, cooldown, extra item slots, and decorations. Official notes from v0.4.4 describe the like total as a base value from cats, costumes, and decorations, then multiplied by the sum of other effects.

Followers unlock biomes and later cats. They are a long-term gate, not a shop currency. When demo players wrote that the mid-game becomes a run for followers, they meant likes were already high while follower milestones still blocked the next location.

Tokens only feed packs. If you are broke on tokens but rich in likes, keep photographing and claiming achievements. The skill tree will not convert likes into boxes.

How to farm tokens without wasting them

Photograph constantly. Tokens drop from cats, so idle time is wasted drop time. Photo-count upgrades (the kind that add extra photo cards per click) let you tag more cats in each cycle, which is the cleanest token farm in the early game.

Do not open packs until a few like-upgrades are online. A stronger likes-per-photo node fills the heart pool and, indirectly, the number of photos you can keep taking. Packs shine once common cats are in and you are hunting costumes. The packs guide covers shop timing in more detail.

If you are chasing 100 percent, spend leftover tokens on remaining costumes rather than hoarding. There is no published token sink after the collection is complete, and Steam lists 49 achievements including collection-style goals such as More cats and Cat lover.

Common mistakes

Spending every token the moment a pack appears, before Photo Count or likes-per-photo is online, slows both currencies. The reverse mistake is hoarding tokens forever because the skill tree looks hungry. The tree is hungry for likes, not tokens.

Another mix-up is treating biome unlocks as a pack problem. New locations are follower-gated. Boxes will not skip a milestone. See how to unlock biomes for the community threshold list.

New players should still start with getting started. For the like formula, read how likes work. For follower walls, use how to get followers. For the shop, stay on the packs guide.

Frequently asked

Do tokens expire? Floating popups vanish, but the credited amount stays in your wallet. There is no timed expiry on banked tokens.

Can I buy skill nodes with tokens? No. Since the v0.4.4 economy change, tokens open packs. Account upgrades spend likes.

Do achievements still give tokens in the full release? The June 2026 notes introduced achievement tokens, and the Steam build ships 49 achievements. Claim the trophy shop whenever it lights up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Snap the Cat.

What are tokens used for in Snap the Cat?

Tokens drop from photographed cats and are spent on packs. Likes buy upgrades and decorations. Followers unlock biomes.

Why did my token popup disappear?

Floating likes, followers, and tokens fade on purpose after a photo. The credit is already in your wallet. You do not need to click the number.

Should I save tokens for a better pack later?

Keep a small buffer if you are one box short of a costume you want, but do not starve the collection. Early packs fill commons. Later packs hunt remaining outfits.

Do duplicate cats waste a pack?

No. Since v0.4.4, extras level the cat or costume you already own instead of giving a useless copy.
